Crafted with simple ingredients and a dash of love, it’s a recipe that beckons even the novice baker to try their hand at creating something truly special, turning a simple meal into a memorable occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • Optional: 1/4 cup raisins or dried fruit, soaked in warm water and drained
  • Egg wash (1 beaten egg mixed with 1 tablespoon of water)
  • Additional butter for greasing and sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk. Add sugar and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix in melted butter, beaten egg, and salt.
  3. Gradually add flour, starting with 3 1/2 cups, until a soft dough forms. If using, fold in raisins or dried fruit.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan. Cover and let rise again until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Brush the top of the loaf with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar if desired.
  9. Bake for 35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Remove from the pan and cool on a wire rack.

Tips & Tricks

  • Ensure your milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast without killing it.
  • For a richer flavor, you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the dough.
  • If the bread is browning too quickly, tent it with aluminum foil.
  • This bread is best enjoyed the day it’s made but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
