Utensils for Preparation

They make life much easier in the kitchen

Execution

Once you’ve prepared your mis-en-place, it’s time to start making the recipes.
During this process, we use certain utensils to help us handle the ingredients. Let’s get to know them.

Spoons, spatulas and skimmers

There are many options for these items. Metal, silicone and bamboo are the most common materials.
To begin with, you can buy a basic kit or go on to acquire individual pieces, according to your tastes.
I really like using silicone spoons, especially in frying pans and pans with non-stick coating. But I also use stainless steel ones.
Bamboo utensils are another great option as they don’t affect the non-stick coating, are resistant to bacteria and are environmentally friendly.

Twizeers

Very useful for handling hot, fried or baked food.

I have two different sizes because they help a lot depending on the type of preparation and the size/depth of the pan. Give preference to models that have a lock to keep them closed when stored.

Fouet or wire whisk

Whenever you need to whisk to incorporate air or mix ingredients for a preparation such as omelettes, egg whites, cakes and more, the Fouet will make your life easier.

Sieves

Another widely used item is the sieve, not only for sieving, but also for draining, acting as a small colander.
Use stainless steel ones, they last longer and don’t smell. I like to have different sizes and weaves.

Splatter screen

It looks like a sieve, but it’s a protective screen to place on top of the frying pan that will hold back much of the oil that splashes out during the frying process.

Believe me, it’s worth it…

Rolling pin

When preparing pasta, it is often necessary to use a rolling pin to roll out the dough, reducing its height to suit the recipe. There are various models of different materials and prices, but a basic one will suffice.

Silicone glove

Can I give you some advice? Have at least one. If you can, have two. It helps a lot when handling hot pans and baking sheets. Don’t rely solely on using cloths to take baking sheets out of the oven or turning saucepans over to drain the dishes.
